Did you know????
Our current Rector, Polk Culpepper has been here longer than half of our previous Rector's?
One of the previous Rector's served for 22 years!
One Rector served twice during two different periods.
We haven't had a Rector pass away in office. (whew)
One Rector passed away 2 weeks after being terminated.
The first person to be baptized at St. Paul's died two weeks later.
The first person who was buried from St. Paul's was the man who was responsible for the starting of St. Paul's.
At one time, there was 300 members in the Sunday School's
Several of our members were near, (in years) to the Civil War when they were born, then they are now to World War Two?
One of our SR. Wardens was shot in the hip by an aggrieved lover.
When the cornerstone of the current church building was removed (on the building's one hundred year anniversary) only a 'soggy mess' was in the box, as it had sprung a leak, and water had seeped in.
All but one piece of the solid silver "altar service" was stolen inthe 1980's: when this was reported in the newspaper, the thief, or another one, returned and took that piece as well.
In the early days of St. Paul's, member's rented pews, and nameplates were installed on the aisle ends of the pews to indiciate ownership. "Vacant" pews (usually toward the back of the church) were available for visitors. (This is the way church operations were financed)
The outside of the church building is not 100% stone. When the building the built, the plans called for a "wing" on the back left, to match the "wing" on the right. There wasn't enoughenough land or money available, so the left side, behind the chimney, was made in brick. Years later when the covered walkway to the Carriage House was added, the brick wall of the church was covered in a patented concrete material, matching as nearly as possible, the rest of the church's exterior.
